Originally a drummer and percussionist, Matt began studying piano at age 18 when he met jazz studies professor and pianist Darrell Grant while auditioning into the music department at Portland State University. That meeting inspired Matt to pursue a new path, becoming a jazz piano performance major with Grant as his private instructor. During this time Matt studied with Charley Gray and Randy Porter and gained knowledge and experience in the fields of composition and arranging. In his last year at PSU, Matt became the first recipient of the William Bradford Mersereau Jr. endowed scholarship.
Since graduating in 2008 Matt has begun to make a name for himself in the Portland jazz scene leading his own Matt Tabor Trio, playing solo, and as a sideman with a host of local acts including Shelly Rudolph, Lily Wilde, Bre Gregg, and Chance Hayden.
